Should I use old AP Statistics review books?

Keep it for the statistics and do not trust it for the course. Explanations and worked examples of surviving content are still correct, because the subject did not change. The unit structure, topic numbers, removed topics and exam medium in an older book are wrong for May 2027.

The short answer
A review book written for the nine-unit AP Statistics course is two things bound together, and they have aged very differently.
The first is a statistics textbook: how a sampling distribution works, how to check conditions, how to build a confidence interval, what a p-value means, how to read a residual plot. None of that changed in the redesign. A clear explanation of the central limit theorem from an older book is a clear explanation of the central limit theorem.
The second is a map of the exam: how many units there are, what they are called, which topics sit where, what is examinable, and what exam day looks like. All of that changed, and a book cannot tell you it is out of date.
So the answer is not yes or no, it is which half. Use the explanations and the practice problems on surviving content. Replace the structure, the topic list and the exam format from current sources. The rest of this guide is how to tell those halves apart quickly.
What is still fine in an older book
Most of the pages, in fact. Look at the five current unit titles and you are looking at the same subject: exploring and collecting data, probability and random variables, inference for proportions, inference for means, and regression.
These are all still examinable, and an older treatment of any of them is still a good one:
- Shape, center, spread and unusual features; histograms, boxplots, stemplots, the 1.5 IQR rule for outliers.
- Standard deviation, z-scores, percentiles, the normal distribution and the empirical rule.
- Sampling methods, sources of bias, experimental design, and the scope of inference you may draw from a study.
- Probability rules, conditional probability, independence and two-way tables.
- Random variables, expected value, and the binomial distribution.
- Sampling distributions and the central limit theorem.
- Confidence intervals and significance tests for one proportion, two proportions, one mean and two means, including paired data.
- Chi-square tests for homogeneity and independence.
- Scatterplots, correlation, the least-squares line, prediction and residual plots.
The arithmetic did not change either. A one-proportion z-interval worked in a 2019 book gives the same interval today, as the worked example below shows. If the statistics in front of you is correct statistics, it is correct for your exam.
What will mislead you
Four things, in rough order of how much damage they do.
The unit structure. Nine units against the five you are being taught. Every chapter heading, every cross-reference and every unit review is organized around a structure your exam does not use, and unit-weighted study plans built on it point at the wrong material.
The topic numbers. Both courses use codes of the same shape, so an old 4.9 looks exactly like a current 4.9 and means something completely different. In the Fall 2026 course, 2.9 is Parameters of Random Variables and 4.9 is Setting Up a Test for the Difference Between Two Population Means. In the old course those numbers were, respectively, analyzing departures from linearity and combining random variables, both removed. Match on titles, never on codes.
The removed topics, taught as examinable. Five entries were removed outright, and an older book gives them chapters, practice sets and space in its practice exams. What was removed from AP Statistics names all five and explains which part of each one survived.
The exam medium. The May 2027 exam is fully digital, with all student responses submitted through the Bluebook testing app, per the College Board revisions page. A 20-minute audit of a book you already own
Do this once, with a pencil, before you study from it again. It is quick and it converts an unreliable book into a reliable one.
- Count the units in the contents. Nine means the book is built on the old course. Five means it claims to be current, and step 4 checks whether it really is.
- Find and mark the removed chapters. Look for inference for the slope of a regression line, chi-square goodness of fit, the geometric distribution, combining random variables, and transformations to achieve linearity. Put a line through each in the contents page so you never open them by accident.
- Mark the one that is only half removed. Transformations to achieve linearity is gone, but reading curvature in a residual plot is still assessed under topic 5.4. - Check what it says about exam day. If it describes a paper exam, or is silent about Bluebook while claiming to describe the current format, its exam-strategy chapter is out of date whatever its cover year says.
- Ignore its topic numbers from here on. Write the current unit and topic titles inside the front cover instead. The units guide has all 55 with their codes.

Practice exams are the riskiest part of an old book
The chapters are salvageable one at a time. Full practice exams are harder, because their problems are the point of them.
Three specific issues. An old practice exam contains questions on removed content, and there is no marking on them to say so, so you will lose confidence over material that cannot be tested. Its balance of questions reflects the old unit structure rather than the current weightings, so it does not rehearse the mix you will meet: Unit 1 is now 20 to 30% of the multiple-choice section and Unit 5 is 10 to 20% on five topics. And it is a paper rehearsal for a screen exam.
That does not make old practice exams useless, it makes them raw material. Work through one with the audit above in hand, skip anything on removed content, and treat your score as a diagnostic on individual skills rather than as a predicted grade.

If you are buying rather than salvaging
Three checks before you spend money, and none of them is the year on the cover. Run the same audit as above, on the contents page and the index, before you pay rather than after: five units carrying the current titles, a paragraph that knows the exam is fully digital from May 2027, and no goodness of fit or slope inference presented as exam content.
The first of those is the one a shop lets you do in thirty seconds, and it is the most revealing. A book that names five units but cannot name them correctly has been relabeled rather than rewritten, and the units guide has the titles to check it against.
A book that passes all three is current. A book that fails any of them can still be worth using at a low price, on the terms in this guide. A revision stack that mixes old and new safely
The workable arrangement is to let each source do what it is good at.
Structure and scope from current sources. What the units are, what is in them, what is examinable, what exam day looks like. Use the units guide, what changed for 2027 and the exam format page, then read your book's chapters against the five unit pages: Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, Unit 4 and Unit 5. This is the layer where an old book is actively wrong, so do not take any of it from one.
Explanation from whatever explains it best to you. If the older book's chapter on the central limit theorem finally made it click, use that chapter. Understanding is not versioned.
Practice from anything, filtered. Old problem sets are fine once the removed topics are struck out. Add current sets for the mix and for on-screen rehearsal.
Interpretation sentences from a current source, and memorised. These are the one part of the exam you have to carry in your head; the formula sheet covers the rest. A confidence interval an older book gets exactly right
A random sample of 200 students at a large school is taken, and 54 of them walk to school. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of all students at the school who walk. Would a book written for the nine-unit course have taught this differently?
Identify the procedure: one-sample z-interval for a population proportion, topic 3.3 in the current course.
Compute the sample proportion: .
Check the conditions. Random: the sample is stated to be random. Ten percent: the sample of 200 is at most 10% of the population only if the school has at least 2,000 students, which is what large has to mean here, so say so rather than waving at it. Large counts: and , both at least 10.
Compute the standard error: .
Take the critical value for 95% confidence: .
Margin of error: .
Interval: , which runs from to .
Interpret it: we are 95% confident that the interval from 0.208 to 0.332 captures the true proportion of students at this school who walk.
The interval is roughly , or 20.8% to 33.2%. Nothing in those steps depends on which version of the course a book was written for: the formula, the critical value, the conditions and the interpretation sentence are all the same statistics. This is the half of an old book you should keep using.
How much of an old book is dead weight
Suppose a 400-page review book devotes one chapter to each of the nine old units and gives them equal space. The whole of the old Unit 9 was removed. How many pages of that book are content you cannot be examined on, and what share of the book is that?
Pages per chapter under the equal-space assumption: pages.
The old Unit 9, Inference for Quantitative Data: Slopes, was removed in full, so that is pages of unexaminable content in one block.
As a share of the book: , so 11.1%.
Now add the four removals that sit inside other chapters rather than being chapters of their own. Each is a section rather than a chapter, so suppose each takes 6 pages: pages.
Total unexaminable content: pages.
As a share of the book: , about 17%.
Sanity check the other direction: pages, or 83%, is content on topics that are still examinable.
Roughly 68 pages, about 17% of the book, under those assumptions. The 6-page figure is an assumption you should replace by looking at your own book, but the shape of the answer is the useful part: something like a sixth of the content is dead, and five sixths is still worth reading. That is why the advice is to audit rather than to bin.

Can I use a 2024 or 2025 AP Statistics review book for the 2027 exam?
For the statistics, yes. For the course structure, the topic list and exam day, no. A book written for the previous course describes nine units, includes five blocks of removed content, and cannot know that the May 2027 exam is fully digital in Bluebook. Audit it against the checklist above and use it as a problem bank.
Which chapters of an old book should I skip?
The chapter on inference for the slope of a regression line, and the four sections covering the other removals, which what was removed from AP Statistics sets out in full. Keep the residual-plot pages even though transformations are gone: reading curvature in a residual plot is still assessed under topic 5.4.
Are old AP Statistics practice exams still worth doing?
As a skills diagnostic, yes, once you strike out questions on removed content. As a predicted grade, no. Their balance follows the old unit structure rather than the current weightings, and they are a paper rehearsal for a screen exam. Treat the score as information about individual skills.
How do I tell whether a review book is written for the new course?
Open the contents page, not the cover. If it counts nine units it was written for the previous course; if it counts five, check that it names them correctly, because a relabeled book usually cannot. Is the statistics itself different in the new course?
No. A one-proportion z-interval is a one-proportion z-interval, so the procedures, formulas, conditions and interpretations for content that is still examinable read the same in any correct source.
