How to pace the AP Statistics exam

Section I is 42 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, which is 2.14 minutes each. Section II is 4 free-response questions in 90 minutes, which is 22.5 minutes each. A free-response question gets exactly 10.5 times the time of a multiple-choice question, and is worth exactly 10.5 times as much.

Every timing figure here is the Fall 2026 AP Statistics exam format, first administered May 2027: two 90-minute sections weighted 50% each, 42 multiple-choice questions, and 4 free-response questions worth 10 points apiece. The fully digital delivery through Bluebook is from College Board's AP Statistics future revisions page. Nothing about the testing app's interface, timer, or navigation is described here, because it is not published in either source.

The two numbers everything else comes from

Section I is 42 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Section II is 4 free-response questions in a separate 90 minutes of its own. Divide, and you have your pace.

In seconds the first is 2.142857×60=128.62.142857 \times 60 = 128.6 seconds, so about 2 minutes 9 seconds. The second is 22 minutes 30 seconds.

The ratio of those two per-question figures is the number worth carrying around:

A free-response question gets exactly 10.5 times the time of a multiple-choice question. That is not a rounded figure. It falls straight out of the format, because the 90 minutes cancel: 904÷9042=424=10.5\frac{90}{4} \div \frac{90}{42} = \frac{42}{4} = 10.5.

Why 10.5 turns up twice

The two sections carry the same weight, 50% each, and they each get 90 minutes. So the average rate at which the exam pays for a minute is identical in both:

Now price the questions. One multiple-choice question is worth 50%42=1.190476%\frac{50\%}{42} = 1.190476\% of the exam. One free-response question is worth 12.5%. Their ratio:

The same 10.5. A free-response question takes 10.5 times as long and is worth 10.5 times as much, so the exchange rate is flat. Check it from the other side: 1.190476%÷2.142857=0.5556%1.190476\% \div 2.142857 = 0.5556\% per minute, and 12.5%÷22.5=0.5556%12.5\% \div 22.5 = 0.5556\% per minute. The same rate both times.

Two things follow, and they are the whole argument of this page.

There is no cheap section. Rushing Section I does not buy you points in Section II, because the format gives each section its own 90 minutes. Minutes are not transferable between them. What pace mainly buys you is reaching the end of each section with every question answered.

A minute lost is a minute lost wherever you lose it. Once you are past whatever slack you built in, sixty seconds spent staring at a multiple-choice question you cannot start costs the same share of the exam as sixty seconds spent staring at a free-response question you cannot start, and at each section's average rate that share is 0.5556% either way. That is a useful thought precisely because it feels wrong: the free-response section feels more expensive, and it is not.

Checkpoints for Section I

42 divides by 3, so the natural checkpoints are questions 14, 28, and 42. Here is where you should be at each one under three different plans.

The even-pace column is 14×9042=3014 \times \frac{90}{42} = 30, 28×9042=6028 \times \frac{90}{42} = 60, and 42×9042=9042 \times \frac{90}{42} = 90. Exact thirds, no rounding.

The middle column is the one to memorize. A flat 2 minutes a question is easier to hold under pressure than 2.142857, and 42×2=8442 \times 2 = 84 minutes, so it leaves exactly 6 minutes at the end. It also takes the pacing arithmetic off your plate: double the question number and that is the minute you should be finishing it. Question 9 by minute 18. Question 25 by minute 50. Treat those as deadlines rather than targets: the two-minute stopping rule in the next section is a cap, not a pace, so every question you finish early puts you ahead of the card rather than behind it.

The right-hand column is for someone who would rather build in slack than finish at the bell. Reserving 10 minutes leaves 80 minutes of working time, so 8042=1.904762\frac{80}{42} = 1.904762 minutes, which is 1.904762×60=114.31.904762 \times 60 = 114.3 seconds, about 1 minute 54 seconds a question. What that margin buys is room on the question in front of you: the ones that turn out to be hard can run well past their share and the section still ends on time. None of that depends on being able to move back through the section. Whether the 10 minutes could instead be spent going back over questions you have already left is a question about the app rather than the format, and this page does not answer it.

One honest caveat before you build anything on this. A checkpoint schedule assumes you can see how much time has passed. Whether the Bluebook app shows a running clock, and what form it takes, is not something this site can tell you. College Board's future revisions page states that the May 2027 exam moves to fully digital with all student responses submitted through Bluebook, and says nothing about the interface. Ask your AP coordinator what you will be able to see, and build the plan around their answer rather than around an assumption.

What falling behind actually costs

Minutes are hard to feel. Questions are not, so convert.

A multiple-choice question you spend 4 minutes on has eaten 42.142857=1.8667\frac{4}{2.142857} = 1.8667 questions of budget. It borrowed 0.8667 of a question from somewhere else in the section. Once, that is survivable.

Six times, it is not. Each one runs 42.142857=1.8571434 - 2.142857 = 1.857143 minutes over, so six of them run 6×1.857143=11.1428576 \times 1.857143 = 11.142857 minutes over, about 11 minutes 9 seconds. In questions that is 11.1428572.142857=5.2\frac{11.142857}{2.142857} = 5.2 questions of budget spent, and if you run out of time it is the last questions in the section that pay for it.

The end state is worth pricing too. Suppose your real average turns out to be 3 minutes a question. In 90 minutes you reach question 903=30\frac{90}{3} = 30, and 12 questions are never looked at. At 1.190476%1.190476\% each that is 12×1.190476=14.29%12 \times 1.190476 = 14.29\% of the exam, which is more than one whole free-response question is worth.

That comparison is the reason a stopping rule beats working faster. Nobody thinks their way from 3 minutes a question to 2 minutes a question during an exam. What you can do is decide in advance that at 2 minutes you commit to your best answer and move on, and take the small loss on that question instead of the large one at the end of the section.

Section II: 2.25 minutes a point

Section II is 4 questions worth 10 points each, so 40 points, in 90 minutes.

Every question is worth the same 10 points and the same 12.5% of the exam. The 90 minutes are yours to split across all four, and with nothing to separate the questions on value, an even 22.5 minutes each is the default worth planning against. Question 3 is always inference, and the other three are multi-focus questions named for the course practices they target. None of that changes the time each one deserves. One point is 12.5%10=1.25%\frac{12.5\%}{10} = 1.25\% of the exam. Price a free-response point against Section I and the flat exchange rate appears again. A point costs 2.252.142857=1.05\frac{2.25}{2.142857} = 1.05 multiple-choice questions of time, and is worth 1.25%1.190476%=1.05\frac{1.25\%}{1.190476\%} = 1.05 multiple-choice questions of score. Time and value move together everywhere on this exam.

What you cannot do is budget inside a question before you have seen it. How the 10 points are distributed within a free-response question is set question by question, and it is not published in advance, so any plan of the shape "three minutes on the first part" rests on a number nobody has. Budget the 22.5 minutes per question, then split it when the question is in front of you and you can count what it is asking for.

One rule does survive that uncertainty: 2.25 minutes a point. If you have spent 9 minutes on something you judge to be worth 2 points, you are running at twice the sustainable rate, since 2×2.25=4.52 \times 2.25 = 4.5 minutes is all those points can afford, and the questions after it will pay the difference.

The things this page will not guess at

Pacing advice is exactly where invented detail creeps in, so here is the boundary this page keeps.

Every exam figure above comes from two published sources. The section counts, the 90 minutes each, the 50% weightings, the four free-response questions and their 10 points apiece are the Fall 2026 exam format, first administered May 2027. The fully digital delivery through Bluebook comes from College Board's future revisions page. Everything else here is arithmetic done on those figures. The pace scenarios, the four-minute question and the three-minute average are illustrations, chosen to be round rather than because anyone published them.

Some of it is published, and some is not. The revisions page does say you will be given scratch paper for planning and calculations, and a printed reference information booklet with the same reference information also available inside Bluebook. It also says you may still bring an approved handheld graphing calculator, on top of the Desmos calculator built into Bluebook. What it does NOT say is how the app behaves: whether a timer is visible, whether there is a review screen, how you move between questions, or what happens to a question you leave. This site does not describe those. Your AP coordinator is the person to ask, and asking early is worth doing, because a pacing plan built on the wrong assumption is worse than no plan at all. There is no curve to pace against either. May 2027 is the first administration of the redesigned exam, so no score distribution exists for it and no points-to-5 conversion can be quoted. What is a good AP Statistics score sets out what can honestly be said.

How to rehearse it

Pace is a physical habit, not a fact you know. Three drills build it.

  1. Learn the checkpoint card by heart, well before exam day. Three lines is enough: 14 by 28 minutes, 28 by 56, 42 by 84. You will have scratch paper, so writing it down at the start is an option, but memorizing it costs nothing and does not depend on whether you can see elapsed time, which is not published. In your own timed practice, check the time at those three points and nowhere else, because watching it on every question is its own time sink, and rehearse the card as the plan you would run on exam day if you can.
  2. Time one full 90-minute block and record where you actually were at 28 and 56 minutes. The gap between the plan and the reality is the thing to work on. Compare your first third against your last, because a surplus early and a shortfall late is the pattern the checkpoints exist to catch.
  3. Practice the stopping decision, not only the questions. Put a 2-minute timer on single items from the practice sets and make yourself answer and move on when it sounds. The skill being trained is abandoning a question you probably could have got, which is uncomfortable, and which is the entire point of the section above.

Building a checkpoint card you can hold in your head

Section I is 42 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. You want to finish with time in hand and you do not want to do arithmetic during the exam. Compare an even pace, a flat 2 minutes per question, and a plan that reserves 10 minutes at the end, and work out the checkpoint times for questions 14, 28, and 42 under each.

  1. Even pace: 9042=2.142857\frac{90}{42} = 2.142857 minutes per question. In seconds, 2.142857×60=128.62.142857 \times 60 = 128.6, so about 2 minutes 9 seconds.

  2. Even-pace checkpoints: 14×2.142857=3014 \times 2.142857 = 30 minutes, 28×2.142857=6028 \times 2.142857 = 60 minutes, 42×2.142857=9042 \times 2.142857 = 90 minutes. They are exact because 42=3×1442 = 3 \times 14, so the checkpoints are the thirds of a 90-minute section.

  3. Flat 2 minutes: the checkpoint is double the question number, so 14×2=2814 \times 2 = 28 minutes, 28×2=5628 \times 2 = 56 minutes, 42×2=8442 \times 2 = 84 minutes.

  4. Time left over on the flat plan: 9084=690 - 84 = 6 minutes.

  5. Reserve 10 minutes instead: working time is 9010=8090 - 10 = 80 minutes, so the pace is 8042=1.904762\frac{80}{42} = 1.904762 minutes per question, which is 1.904762×60=114.31.904762 \times 60 = 114.3 seconds, about 1 minute 54 seconds.

  6. Reserved-plan checkpoints: 14×1.904762=26.66714 \times 1.904762 = 26.667 minutes, which is 26 minutes 40 seconds; 28×1.904762=53.33328 \times 1.904762 = 53.333 minutes, which is 53 minutes 20 seconds; and 42×1.904762=8042 \times 1.904762 = 80 minutes.

  7. Check all three land inside the section: 42×2.142857=9042 \times 2.142857 = 90, 42×2=8442 \times 2 = 84, and 42×1.904762=8042 \times 1.904762 = 80.

Even pace puts you at 30, 60, and 90 minutes. A flat 2 minutes per question puts you at 28, 56, and 84 minutes, leaves 6 minutes spare, and needs no arithmetic under pressure: double the question number to get the minute you should be finishing it. Reserving 10 minutes tightens the pace to about 1 minute 54 seconds and moves the checkpoints to 26 minutes 40 seconds, 53 minutes 20 seconds, and 80 minutes.

The price of one four-minute question

You are working at the even pace of 9042\frac{90}{42} minutes per multiple-choice question and you spend 4 minutes on question 9. How much of the section's budget did that question consume, how much did it borrow from the others, and what does it cost if you do the same thing six times?

  1. Budget per question: 9042=2.142857\frac{90}{42} = 2.142857 minutes.

  2. Budget consumed by a 4-minute question: 42.142857=1.8667\frac{4}{2.142857} = 1.8667 questions.

  3. Borrowed from elsewhere in the section: 1.86671=0.86671.8667 - 1 = 0.8667 of one question. A single 4-minute question costs you most of another question's entire time.

  4. In minutes the overrun is 42.142857=1.8571434 - 2.142857 = 1.857143 minutes.

  5. Six such questions: 6×1.857143=11.1428576 \times 1.857143 = 11.142857 minutes over, which is about 11 minutes 9 seconds.

  6. Back into questions: 11.1428572.142857=5.2\frac{11.142857}{2.142857} = 5.2 questions of budget gone. Equivalently, 6×0.8667=5.26 \times 0.8667 = 5.2.

  7. If those 5.2 questions are the ones you run out of time for, the score cost is 5.2×50%42=5.2×1.190476%=6.19%5.2 \times \frac{50\%}{42} = 5.2 \times 1.190476\% = 6.19\% of the exam.

  8. Set that against Section II, where one whole free-response question is worth 12.5%: six four-minute questions have cost you about half a free-response question.

A single 4-minute question consumes 1.8667 questions of budget and borrows 0.8667 of a question from the rest of Section I. Six of them run about 11 minutes 9 seconds over, which is 5.2 questions of budget and roughly 6.19% of the exam if that is where the section runs out. The fix is not working faster, it is a 2-minute stopping rule applied before the overrun happens.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do I get per question on the AP Statistics exam?

Section I gives 90 minutes for 42 multiple-choice questions, which is 9042=2.14\frac{90}{42} = 2.14 minutes, about 2 minutes 9 seconds, each. Section II gives 90 minutes for 4 free-response questions, which is 22.5 minutes each. A free-response question therefore gets exactly 10.5 times the time of a multiple-choice question.

Where should I be halfway through the multiple-choice section?

On an even pace you finish question 21 at exactly 45 minutes, since 21×9042=4521 \times \frac{90}{42} = 45. The easier checkpoints to remember are the thirds: question 14 at 30 minutes and question 28 at 60 minutes. On a flat 2 minutes per question those become 28 and 56 minutes, and you finish question 42 at minute 84 with 6 minutes spare.

Should I rush Section I to leave more time for the free response?

No, and you could not anyway. The exam format gives each section its own 90 minutes, so time saved in Section I is not time gained in Section II. The two sections also carry the same weight, 50% each, and each gets 90 minutes, so at the average rate a minute is worth the same 0.5556% of the exam wherever it is spent. Pace exists to get you to the end of each section, not to move time between them.

How long should I spend on the inference free-response question?

The same 22.5 minutes as the other three. All four free-response questions are worth 10 points and 12.5% of the exam, so nothing about its value earns Question 3 extra time, even though it is the most predictable question on the exam and the one worth drilling hardest. Every extra minute there is paid for by the questions that follow it, at 2.25 minutes per point.

Does the Bluebook app show a timer during the exam?
